Call to Artists: A Display of Welcome


Call to Artists from the Marriott Spartanburg, The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg and the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg:


You are invited to submit an entry for “A Display of Welcome” presented by the Marriott Spartanburg, The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg and the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg.


“A Display of Welcome” is a juried sculpture contest open to all sculpture artists residing in the State of South Carolina. The Marriott Spartanburg along with local patrons and stakeholders are hosting a juried art competition among local and regional artists to create an original sculpted piece of art that will permanently reside on the outside patio of the Terrace Lounge at the hotel. This sculpted work will welcome guests to the Terrace and will reflect and contribute to the creative culture of Spartanburg.


The Terrace Lounge is Spartanburg's newest destination for outdoor dining and entertainment. Whether you are rooting on the Terriers or out on the town, The Terrace will soon become one of your favorite spots. The dining and entertainment area features:


• Savory, grilled specialties
• The freshest signature cocktails
• 55" flat‐screen televisions for all the sports action
• Comfortable, soft seating around inviting fire pits
• Beautiful outdoor heaters and cooling misters
• Live music
• Family activities
 
Eligibility


All Sculpture artists, 18 years or older, who reside in South Carolina may submit work for this contest.  


Guidelines



• All artwork must be original and must be created by the submitting artist or collaboration of artists.
• Acceptable media includes weather resistant metals, wood, tempered or stained glass, fiberglass or any combination thereof. Accepted piece must be able to permanently withstand all weather conditions. Any routine maintenance and/or sustainability guidelines should be provided by the artist in the proposal and will be part of the selection process.
• Artists will need to submit a proposed timeline for construction of their sculpture with their proposal.
• The finished piece must be no larger than 8’ in diameter, and 10’ in height.
• Artists should submit 3 to 5 images depicting different perspectives of a proposed sculpture.
• Images must be in jpeg or pdf format and cannot exceed 1 MB.
• Entries should be submitted digitally on a CD/DVD format. CD’s/DVD’s will not be returned.
• An application must be submitted with all images.

Awards


The winning artists will be awarded $10,000 for the design & construction of the sculpture.  Spartanburg Marriott will be responsible for additional costs related to shipping/delivery.  Prize money will be paid in two (2) installments; the 1stinstallment will be issued upon award of the commission, and the 2nd installment will be awarded upon delivery of the sculpture. A jury committee, selected with an affiliation to the Spartanburg Community, will select the finalists from the submissions. The finalists will be displayed in the Terrace Lounge where the local community, hotel guests, jurors, and the art community will select their favorite design by vote, during a series of events at the hotel.

Liability


Artists release the Marriott Spartanburg, the Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg, the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, and any agents or representatives of these groups from any responsibility for theft, damage or loss. The Marriott Spartanburg, the Arts Partnership and the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg reserves the right to photograph and reproduce any entry submitted for publicity purposes.

• January 16th:: Application and Submissions Due
• February 3:  Finalists chosen by Jury Committee
• February 24: Community Voting begins
• March 16th: Community Voting Ends; Winner is selected & notified
