St. John’s Episcopal Church in Florence continues its
Epiphany Concert Series with a performance by organist Julia Harlow on Sunday,
January 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.
There is no charge for the concert but donations are
appreciated. Light refreshments will be
provided. St. John’s is located at 252
S. Dargan Street in Florence. Parking is
available in the lot behind the church.
Dr.
Julia Harlow is Director of Music and Organist at Second Presbyterian Church in
Charleston, and teaches organ, harpsichord, and ear training at the College of
Charleston. Originally from Iowa City,
Iowa, she also lived in the Northwest before coming to the Lowcountry fifteen
years ago.
Harlow
earned the Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance and Pedagogy and Master
of Music in Early Keyboard Performance degrees at the University of Oregon
(Eugene), and the Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from the University of
Iowa. Her teachers have been Delbert
Disselhorst, Guy Bovet,and Joan Benson (clavichord).
In
addition to performing as a harpsichordist, she tunes and maintains several
instruments in the Charleston area. She
has extensive performance experience of early music, Celtic, Balkan, and Middle
Eastern folk music and has often performed as harpsichordist or organist in
Piccolo Spoleto, and with the Charleston Symphony and Chamber Music
Charleston. Her ensemble “La Belle
Musique” performs music of the 17th and 18th centuries, notably that of women
composers.
