Jared Johnson
St. John's Episcopal Church in Florence will offer a
service of Choral Evensong on Saturday, September 22 at 4:00 p.m. The service is the culmination of a regional
choir workshop being held that day at the church. The music will be presented
by a 50-voice choir under the direction of Dr. Jared Johnson, Canon Organist
and Choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia. William Douglas will share organ playing duties with
Dr. Johnson.
The choir is comprised of church singers,
organists, and directors from St. John’s Episcopal Church and St. Anthony’s
Catholic Church, Florence; St. David’s Episcopal Church, Cheraw; Indiantown
Presbyterian Church, Hemingway; Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Surfside
Beach; Holy Cross Faith Memorial Church, Pawleys Island; Trinity Episcopal
Church, Myrtle Beach; and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Charleston. The choral music presented during the service
will include selections by Felix Mendelssohn and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Dr. Jared Johnson was appointed Canon Organist and
Choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in 2003. As an organ
recitalist, he has appeared in major venues throughout North America, Great
Britain, Sweden, and Australia. His solo recordings on the Pro Organo and
JAV labels have attracted critical praise and have been broadcast nationally on
Pipedreams. Dr. Johnson earned his M.M., M.M.A. and D.M.A.
degrees at Yale University. In 1997, he was awarded a Watson Fellowship
for a year’s study of choral music and conducting in London. Prior to
his appointment at
Trinity Cathedral, Dr. Johnson served on the music staffs of Trinity Church in
Boston; the Memorial Church at Harvard; Trinity Church on the Green in New
Haven, Connecticut; and the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
William Douglas
William Douglas is an Organ Performance major at the
University of South Carolina. He served
as Music Ministry Intern at St. John’s from October 2011 through August 2012.
St. John’s is located at 252 S. Dargan
Street in Florence. Parking is available
in the lot behind the church.
