RENOFEST ANNOUNCES 2015 SCHEDULE

Tickets are on sale now for the RenoFest Bluegrass Festival coming back to downtown Hartsville, SC, March 27-29 (“ALWAYS THE FOURTH WEEKEND IN MARCH.”)  The festival honors South Carolina’s premier bluegrass legend Don Reno.   As in the past all RenoFest events, with the exception of the Downtown Hoedown, take place inside the historic Center Theater in downtown Hartsville.

The event kicks off at 1:30 on Friday March 27 with the renowned band contest.  Seven bands will compete for the $1,500 prize awarded to the winner.  “We have seven top quality bands competing this year,” said Festival Director Marty Driggers.  “It is easily the most competitive field we have ever seen in the festival,” said Driggers.  The seven competing groups are all from Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

On Friday night RenoFest takes over downtown Hartsville with its annual Downtown Hoe-down and BBQ.  The BBQ, sponsored by Black Creek Arts Council is from 6PM – 9PM.   $8 barbeque tickets for the Hoe-Down at Burry Park can also be bought on site.  Barbeque can be eaten on site, picnic style, while enjoying the free blue grass music or it may be picked up and eaten at home.  After 9PM bands take over numerous downtown locations and it's Bluegrass until.

On Saturday, March 28 10 AM – 12 Noon the action continues with the hotly contested State Banjo and State Guitar contests featuring some of the finest pickers anywhere around.  Saturday afternoon and evening features a full slate of outstanding concerts by some of the best professional bluegrass entertainers in the country til 10PM, with local food vendors outside the theater.  However, all the action is not inside the theatre. RenoFest also has bluegrass jamming going on everywhere in town.

The festival winds up on Sunday morning with a Gospel Sing at 10:30 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church (in the Sanctuary) on College Avenue. 

Tickets are available through the website www.renofest.com.  This year, the festival is a presentation of Black Creek Arts made possible by generous donations from businesses, individuals and bluegrass fans, grants from town and county and the SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The three- day bluegrass music festival is served up, small-town style, with lots of southern hospitality and outstanding down-home cooking, a perfect fit for that great American musical genre - bluegrass music.

 As folks around here say, “On the 4^th weekend of March, our little All-American City becomes RenoFest!”

March 13: Submission Deadline for Black Creek Arts Inaugural Juried Competition

Black Creek Arts Council of Hartsville, South Carolina is pleased to announce its inaugural Juried Competition. This national competition is open to all artists over 18 years of age, in all mediums except photography. All entries and fees must be submitted digitally by 3/13/15 through CaFE  by clicking here

Artists may provide up to two separate images for each piece submitted, $35 for up to three pieces.

Juror is Frank McCauley, Assistant Director and Chief Curator for the Sumter County Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & FEES

All entries and fees must be submitted digitally through CaFE www.callforentry.org

Artists may provide up to two separate images for each piece submitted.

This is a nonrefundable entry fee, even if works are not selected for the show.

SELECTION

The juror will review all images of work submitted. Selected pieces are to be delivered to the arts center for installation. BCAC reserves the right to decline any work that is not received in a state ready for hanging according to the guidelines presented under “Eligibility.” The juror will view the exhibition and select the award winners. At the juror’s discretion, any works that differ substantially from the images submitted for initial consideration may be declined. All work selected for the Black Creek Arts Juried Exhibition must remain through the entirety of the exhibition. Any work not sold must be picked up on the dates specified. Any work remaining 30 days after the exhibition’s end becomes property of Black Creek Arts.

JUROR

Frank McCauley was born in Jacksonville, FL in 1980. Upon receiving his BFA in painting from Winthrop University in 2003, he moved north to Syracuse, NY where he attended Syracuse University and received his MFA in 2008. Frank has been the Director and Curator for Spark Contemporary Art Space in Syracuse, NY and is currently the Assistant Director and Chief Curator for the Sumter County Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC. As an artist he has been in numerous group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and has had solo exhibitions in South America, SC, CA, and NY.

ACCEPTED ENTRIES

All accepted work must be labeled on the back with artist’s name, title of work, and price. All entries must be received by Black Creek Arts Council by Sunday, March 29, 2015 by 4 PM.(This is not a postmark deadline)

SALES

All entries will be available for sale unless marked Not For Sale (NSF). BCAC will retain a 30% commission on all sales. No Price On Request’s (POR) will be accepted.

LIABILITY

Black Creek Arts Council (BCAC) assumes responsibility for insuring the works selected for this exhibition while they are in our possession. BCAC will not cover costs for shipping or insurance for shipping to or from our facilities. BCAC reserves the right to refuse or remove any entry at its discretion. BCAC reserves the right to photograph and reproduce any submitted work for publicity or educational purposes. When an entry is received at BCAC for the exhibition this constitutes the artist’s agreement with the terms set forth in this prospectus.

March 21: Coastal Carolina Concert at First Baptist Church in Hartsville

Coastal Carolina Concert, Chamber and Flute Choirs will present a concert on Sat., Mar. 21, at 7:00 pm, at the First Baptist Church, Hartsville.

The Coastal Carolina University Department of Music will be on tour throughout SC and Georgia on Mar. 19-22, with performances in Hartsville and Columbia, SC, and in Augusta and Atlanta, Ga. The music to be performed will primarily be selected from their on-campus Winter Concert on Mar. 18, entitled "The "Music" of William Shakespeare: New Perspectives on Renaissance Themes." The concert will feature two original, unpublished compositions, commissioned for performance by the CCU Concert, Chamber, and Flute Choirs, as well as several guitar and percussion students. These new pieces were written by Coastal Carolina faculty members Dr. Donald Sloan and Dr. Andrew Fowler. In addition to these featured works, the concert will include published compositions based on Shakespeare texts for choir and flute by mainstream contemporary composers.

In Hartsville, SC the CCU ensembles will present a concert on Sat., Mar. 21, at 7:00 pm, at the First Baptist Church.   This concert will be hosted by Dr. James Beaumier, director of the Hartsville Community Choir and Choral Director at Hartsville High School.

The director of the Concert and Chamber Choirs is Dr. Terri Sinclair, a native of NC and a graduate of Florida State University (MM) and UNC-Greensboro (DMA). She is in her tenth year as Director of Choral Activities at CCU and is Associate Professor of Music. Highlights of her career include performances at state and regional music conferences, the Washington National Cathedral, and the Lincoln Center. She is a published author of multiple articles in scholarly journals and a soon-to-be published composer of an original musical composition. She has presented workshops and reading sessions for state and regional professional conferences and is in high demand as a guest conductor/clinician and choral adjudicator in the southeast. In her first year at CCU, she was the recipient of the CCU Teacher of the Year award. She is listed in Who’s Who of American Women, 26^th ed.

The CCU Flute choir is directed by Dr. Amy Hardison Tully, who is an Associate Professor of Music at Coastal Carolina University. She is principal flutist with Long Bay Symphony in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and as a chamber musician she performs with the Tully Hull Flute and Guitar Duo. She has performed internationally on orchestral and wind symphony tours in Germany, Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic and regionally she has performed at the South Carolina Flute Society, Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, the Florida Flute Association, the National Flute Association at the 2012 Piccolo Spoleto Festival. As a strong advocate of new music, she performed the world premiere of Paul Rice Songs by composer Beth Wiemann, a song cycle for soprano, flute, and guitar that she helped commission and most recently she gave the world premiere of Dance Suite for Flute by South Carolina composer, Andrew Fowler. In addition to performing and teaching, research continues to be an important focus of Amy’s scholarship, as she has numerous published and edited articles on flute and music history. She is an artist endorser and clinician for Azumi Flutes by Altus and Jupiter Flutes and she holds the B.A. in Flute Performance (with Honors) from the University of North Carolina - Wilmington, the M.M. in Musicology from Northwestern University, and the Artist Diploma and D.M.A. in Flute Performance from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where she studied with Constance Lane and Donna Shin.

February 20: Thomas Hart Academy features the Hinson Girls, New Legends Quartet and Others at the Center Theatre

 

Performances by The Hinson Girls, The New Legends Quartet, The THA Middle School Choir, and maybe a special guest or two.  It will be held at the Center Theater on February 20.  Tickets are $15.

Hartsville, SC -- Artsville kicks off its fifth season of operation Monday, January 5 with its popular monthly event, Artsville Open Mic at The Midnight Rooster in Hartsville. Up to 15 songwriters will perform their original material for an intently listening audience. One songwriter will leave with a cash prize and a spot in the 2015 Artsville Songwriting Competition, Saturday, November 7.

September 22-October 17: Safety in Numbers Exhibit by Shaun Richards

Coker College presents an exhibition of paintings by Shaun Richards titled, “Safety in Numbers.” A reception, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. Richards' show will continue through Oct. 17, 2014.

Richards lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is a painting and mixed media artist. Since 2007, his work has been focused on social dynamics, incentives, and identity, along with notions of beauty, and artifice. 

“Through the combination of typography, image and the use of non-traditional subjects taken from magazines and newspaper clippings, Richards make us question what is right and wrong," said Ashley Gillespie, exhibition director for the gallery. "He brings to light the questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis - how our society functions and how we function in society.”  

Richards is especially interested in topics ranging from welfare states to colonialism to institutional bias that surround current people and the phantoms of America’s past.

Shaun Richards was born in 1977, in Brunswick, Georgia, but grew up in rural Southeast Virginia. He attended UNC-Wilmington, where he earned a BA in Art in 1999. In 2003, he enrolled in SUNY Empire State College as a non-matriculated graduate student. Richards left NYC in the spring of 2006, returning to North Carolina to pursue art full time.

The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is open 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, while classes are in session, and is located in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building on the campus of Coker College, Hartsville, S.C. Parking entrance, for the art building, is directly across from 306 E. Home Ave.
