November 19th - 30th: Check out Coker College's 40th Annual Student Competition

Coker College’s Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery presents the college’s 40th Annual Student Art Competition, Monday Nov. 19 through Nov. 30.

Judged annually by a professional artist from outside the Hartsville area, this adjudicated exhibition presents the best student work from the past year, including entries from beginning and advanced students, and has become an event which is widely anticipated by Coker students, staff and faculty.

This year’s judge will be Matthew Litteken, whose paintings are currently on exhibit in the gallery.  Litteken will select all the art, assign places and award prizes, which are donated by art manufacturers and suppliers.

“The judge for this show is given free reign, and the resulting shows have ranged from large and inclusive, to small theme-oriented exhibitions, said Gallery Director and Assistant Professor of Art Larry Merriman.

“As with all of our independent judges, Litteken’s choices may reinforce the opinions of faculty and peers, but they may well refute some of those opinions.  In either case, this selection process has always served as a catalyst for critical discussion.”

The opening reception, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. Merit awards and prizes will be awarded at the opening, and light refreshments will be served.

This competition is sponsored by the Coker College Art Club and is open to all Coker students. Coker students may submit up to three works, in any medium, by 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. For information on presentation format, entry tags and drop-off location, call Merriman at 383-8156, email him at lmerriman@coker.edu or stop by his office (Room 120) in the art building.

The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, while classes are in session, and is located in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building on the campus of Coker College.  The parking entrance for the art building is directly across from 306 East Home Avenue.  For more on the gallery, go to: http://www.ceceliacokerbellgallery.com/
