After a very successful New York run, one of the hottest stage shows in the country rolls into town on Saturday, January 26 with The Marvelous Wonderettes. The show’s setting is the 1958 Springfield High School prom featuring the Wonderettes – Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match.
Written and directed by Roger Bean, the musical stars four blockbuster performers, Ashley Pankow, Tiffany Wiesend, Kelly Karcher and Carly Mooney. The Marvelous Wonderettes features thirty-four energetic hits such as Mr. Sandman, Allegheny Moon, Stupid Cupid, Heatwave, Son of a Preacher Man, Rescue Me and Wedding Bell Blues. Backed by a band of musicians, The Marvelous Wonderettes engage the audience with energetic song, dance and comedy. The audience will also be treated to a stunning array of elaborate show costumes, beautifully capturing a fun filled era.
The show is produced on tour by Springer Theatricals, the national touring unit of the official State Theatre of Georgia, the Springer Opera House, located in Columbus. The Springer is a 140 year-old National Historic Landmark theatre with a year-round schedule of plays, musicals and a top ranked Academy of Theatre Arts.
Since Reconstruction days, the Springer has been a revered regional cultural institution with the world’s most celebrated artists making pilgrimages to perform in the Victorian elegance of its famous mainstage theatre. From Edwin Booth, Lily Langtry, George M. Cohan, Ethel Barrymore and Irving Berlin in the old days to more modern appearances by Mary Martin, Truman Capote, Hal Holbrook, Burt Reynolds, Chet Atkins, Marvin Hamlisch and Garrison Keillor, the Springer Theatre has been a centerpiece for the performing arts in the South since 1871.
Tickets for the performance are $13 and are available at the Cheraw Community Center. Purchase tickets as Christmas gifts for those who enjoy the Doo-wop sounds of the 50’s and 60’s.
