November 6: Coker College's Theatre Presents Metamorphoses

The Coker College Theatre Program will present “Metamorphoses,” a retelling of Ovid by Mary Zimmerman. The play will debut at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 in the Watson Theater at the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center. Additional performances are Nov. 7-8 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

"This show is a truly collaborative effort between the college and the community,” said Kindra Clyne Steenerson, assistant professor of theatre. “Our actors represent a cross-section of class ranks and majors. We're working closely with dance faculty member Heather Watkins on extra movement within the piece, and we have several community members participating as performers and as part of our production team. This level of ensemble creation and community building is so inspiring and fulfilling.

In “Metamorphoses,” Zimmerman reminds audiences of the important role both private and public myths play to move people forward and help them to embrace change, transformation, each other, and love. Water is an integral part of the set design, and becomes a metaphor for the transmutation that occurs in humans, nature, the gods, and the universe. It reflects the change people must embrace with courage and openness in order to grow and better understand themselves and the world around them.”

Production direction was provided by Steenerson, with additional choreography by Coker alumna and faculty member Heather Watkins, set design by Jocelin Lehner, and lighting and pool design by Josh Webb. Students involved in the production include Sarah MacName, stage manager; Kali Daniels and Stacie Kawa, ASMS; Sierra Vennes, props; Terah Gamble, props; and Keon Wilson, sound. The large cast includes students from several disciplines as well as community members.

Zimmerman earned her bachelor of science degree in theatre, master of arts degree in performance studies and doctorate in performance studies from Northwestern University. She is a member of Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company and a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University. “Metamorphoses” was originally produced by Lookingglass Theatre Company, Chicago in 1998 and premiered at the Second State Theatre in New York City in 2001. Zimmerman has adapted and directed several other works including “The Jungle Book,” “Journey to the West,” “The Odyssey,” “Arabian Nights” and “Eleven Rooms of Proust.” She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1998, the Tony Award for Best Director of a Play in 2002 and numerous Jeff Awards.

Tickets are $12 for general admission, $5 for non-Coker students with ID. Admission for Coker students, faculty and staff is free with a Coker ID.
