Study of Atmospheric Perspective with Jim Stratton
This course is designed to introduce beginning painters to the art of creating depth in their work through the use of atmospheric (aerial perspective) techniques. It will also serve as a refresher course for any intermediate or advanced artists who may be struggling with some facet of aerial perspective.
We will begin with a study of paintings (instructor’s work and famous works) that use various techniques to achieve depth in landscape painting. We will look at using both color and value to create distance as well as showing loss of detail, texture, and intensity to enhance the atmospheric quality in landscape works.
Our study of color will include a quick overview of the color wheel, color mixing, the colors of light and simple perspective such as overlap, position of elements relative to the horizon, and size relationships. There will be short explanation of linear perspective as well.
During the paint-a-long, there will be plenty of instruction on brushwork and how to handle the medium which will be either oil or acrylic colors.
List of Materials: (needed by 2nd week of class)
Oil or Acrylic paints (Bright Red, Cadmium Yellow Light, French Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, Black or Payne’s Gray) Note: this is a limited palette...instructor will provide any additional colors.
Brushes: (one 2” blender-Camel Hair or synthetic, one 1/2”-3/4” flat-Camel Hair or synthetic, one #1-#2 round-Came Hair or synthetic.)
Medium for oils-artists’ quality linseed oil (bring holder), for acrylics-water (bring some cups)
Palettes: paper tear-away types, wood, plastic, etc.
Paper towels or rags for clean-up
