May 4: "A Festival of Hymns: The Writers Tell Their Stories"

Mayesville Presbyterian Church will present a hymn festival on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the church's sanctuary.  "A Festival of Hymns: The Writers Tell Their Stories" includes rousing arrangements of favorite congregational hymns, a snapshot of the development of hymn-singing in western churches, and a glimpse into the character of some of the most prolific hymnwriters in the history of Christian hymnody.  The hymn festival is free of charge and a reception will follow.  Mayesville Presbyterian Church is located at 109 W. Sumter Street in Mayesville.

The hymn festival is under the direction of Tammy Williams, who recently retired from a 21-year tenure as Minister of Music/Organist at St. John's Church in Florence.  While enjoying a period of sabbatical, Tammy is serving as the interim organist and choir director at Mayesville Presbyterian.

Mayesville Presbyterian Church took root in the historic farming community of Mayesville, South Carolina.  Between the years 1875 and 1880, settlers in Mayesville who had come down from Virginia and up the Black River from the coastal region recognized the need for a church in the community.  A majority of those settlers were attending the Salem Black River Presbyterian Church and Mount Zion Presbyterian Church.  An application to form a church was made to the Harmony Presbytery at its meeting in October of 1880, and Mayesville Presbyterian Church was organized in January of 1881.
Mayesville Presbyterian Church gathers for traditional worship on Sundays at 11:00, and warmly welcomes newcomers and visitors.
