Level: Beginner with basic watercolor skills / Intermediate

Have you ever found yourself sitting in front of a blank sheet of watercolor paper with reference photo in hand…wondering where to begin? A little preliminary planning can be a good place to start your journey, and in this workshop you’ll learn a step-by-step process for making those important initial design decisions.

Some of the topics we’ll explore include:

• How to identify and develop the concept for your painting
• The benefit of a strong value pattern & creating a value sketch
• Selecting colors for your painting
• Understanding the personality of your paints (watercolor characteristics)

With the planning completed, paint will begin to flow as we use a variety of techniques that best showcase the unique spirit of watercolor. Drawings and reference photos will be provided so that students can paint along with Susan as she demonstrates each step. As an option, students may supply their own reference material and paint the subject of their choice. Each year new demos are created to provide practical experience with various subjects and watercolor techniques.

Susan is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. She teaches workshops and exhibits her paintings at art festivals throughout the Southeast. Susan has created designs for the DaySpring division of Hallmark Cards, and her artwork has been selected for publication in Splash 12: Celebrating Artistic Vision and Splash 14: Light and Color (North Light Books). Susan’s DVD, Painting in Living Color: Carolina Morning is available on her website (www.susancrouch.com) and also from Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff (www.cheapjoes.com).

March 8th & 15th: Hartsville Community Players present 'A Taste of Theatre II"

Hartsville Community Players will present "A Taste of the Theatre II" on two consecutive Saturday evenings, March 8 and March 15 at 6 pm. Tickets are $30 per person, and include appetizers, a complimentary glass of wine, a full-course dinner (catered by Bizzell's), and the performance. To be held at the Gallery at Black Creek Arts. Black Creek Arts Council is hosting "Share Your Heart With the Arts" our annual Valentine's party. February 14, 2014, at Black Creek Arts Center.  There will be a live and silent auction covering visual arts, performing arts, and culinary arts. We will provide heavy hors d'oeuvers, adult beverages, and live music for your enjoyment.  The funds raised for this event will help Black Creek Arts Council continue to foster the Arts in Darlington County.

Through December 20th: Oil & Brass at BCAC

The Oil and Brass Exhibit,  featuring Denny Stevenson and Jim Gleason, will be on display at the Black Creek Arts Center in Hartsville through December 20th.

This two man exhibit will feature Denny Stevenson's oil paintings and Jim Gleason's brass sculptures. Stevenson is drawn to the Southern Landscape with its barns and old buildings. Gleason has the urge to create, combined with a reverence for musical instruments and the desire to preserve whatever life remains in the parts and pieces of an old instrument. This exhibit will remain on display until December 20th.

September 5th - October 25th: Bobbi Adams' Butterflies Are Free Exhibit in Hartsville

Black Creek Arts Council is pleased to present Butterflies Are Free featuring works by Bobbie Adams. This exhibit will remain on display from September 5 until October 25th. The reception to showcase this work is scheduled for September 5th from 5:30-7pm.

Bobbi Adams is a professional artist, gardener and naturalist who states, “The Greek word for butterfly is psyche or soul. In many parts of the world the butterfly is the symbol of the real self and long life.

The initial stages of a butterfly’s metamorphosis are small. As the butterfly grows older, its true beauty shows and butterflies becomes the equivalent of spiritual evolution and rebirth.

It reminds us that we can make changes and express our freedom and joy in old age.”

Adams will also debut her book GATHERINGS FROM THE GARDEN which is illustrated with drawings, collages, and photograph from the author’s garden.

This exhibit will remain on display until October 25th.

The mission of Black Creek Arts Council is to promote and foster the Arts in Darlington County. BCAC’s offices are housed in a state of the art 10,000 square foot facility at 116 West College Avenue in Hartsville, SC. BCAC offers a variety of programs including art classes of all styles, after-school activities, pre-school aged programs, private music lessons, and various types of gallery exhibits. BCAC also offers assistance with arts management, funding, education, and program coordination to arts and cultural organizations in Darlington County.

Adams to show artwork, debut book in September

Bobbi Adams' show of selfmade paper collages will be on display at the Black Creek Arts Center in Hartsville from September 5 through October 25.  Her book, "Gatherings from the Garden", will debut at the show opening on September 5 from 5:30 to 7:30. A book signing will be held at Black Creek on October 5th from 11am to 1pm.

Serendipity  means "a happy accident" or "pleasant" surprise. 

After Fran Gardner and Carolyn Moore Atkinson were introduced to each other these two mixed media artists got together to share their views on art and to see how their own artwork could compliment each other for a two woman show.

Serendipity! That best describes what happened. Two women mixed media artists with totally different styles when put together came together in form, textures, and color.

A Hartsville Community Players tradition, the annual dinner theater production is one of the most anticipated performances of the season.  This year's production of "A Taste of Theater: Monologues, Dialogues, and One-Acts" showcases some of the most brilliant, poignant, and downright hysterical theatrical pieces from stage, film, and television. From a woman sending her son off to his first school dance, to a church lady's cooking show, to a heartwarming conversation between an aunt and her nephew, audience members will love watching their friends and neighbors perform in this fast-paced form of theater.
