St. John’s
Episcopal Church in Florence concludes its Epiphany Concert Series with a
performance by the Carolina Brass on Sunday, February 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the
church’s parish hall.
There is
no charge for the concert but donations are appreciated. Light refreshments will be provided. St. John’s is located at 252 S. Dargan Street
in Florence. Parking is available in the
lot behind the church.
Hailed
by critics as one of America’s finest chamber music groups, Carolina Brass combines virtuosity and good
humor in its performances, embracing the audience with music and
conversation. In addition to classical
recitals and pops concerts, Carolina Brass performs extensively in educational
settings. These programs provide students with performances, demonstrations,
and master classes in an informal and interactive environment.
Established in 1997,
Carolina Brass is comprised of dedicated professionals who were trained at some
of the country's most prestigious schools, including the New England
Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, and the Eastman School of
Music. All have extensive national and
international performing, recording, and touring experience, and all members of
the ensemble serve on faculties at North Carolina colleges and universities
including High Point University, Gardner-Webb University, Wake Forest
University, St. Augustine's College, and Shaw University.
Of
the ensemble’s concert performances, National
Public Radio proclaims the Carolina Brass to be “A high energy, highly competent
ensemble that delivers polished brass on the spot with a spark”, while the
Winston-Salem Journal writes, “Carolina Brass live up to their reputation for
refinement, expressiveness, and taste. Its often lush and multi-colored sound
engulfs the listener like a warm bear hug. It is also well-suited to just about
any style. The group can swing like a hard-driving big band one moment and play
a soft ballad with the utmost in feeling and sensitivity the next.” WGBH of Boston asserts, “Carolina Brass puts
it all together - performances with rhythmic drive and gorgeous lyricism, all
with classical virtuosity and dynamic personality.”
In great demand by composers all over the world, Carolina Brass is dedicated to
playing the finest original compositions and arrangements for brass and
percussion. The group is responsible for many new compositions, and gave 15
world premiere performances last year by noted composers.
As
Summit Recording Artists, Carolina Brass recordings are available worldwide and
are regularly broadcast on National Public Radio. The ensemble plans to release
their sixth CD this year, with increased touring in the U.S. and abroad.
The mission of the
Carolina Brass is to promote the understanding of music and to improve the
performance level of musicians of all ages through performances, residencies,
