February 8: Hartsville- Coker Concert Association Presents Pianist Michael Gurt

On Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, the Hartsville-Coker Concert Association will present a solo recital from renowned pianist Michael Gurt in Watson Theater on the Coker College campus. The program features two major works, Schumann’s Kreisleriana and Rachmaninoff’s second piano sonata, among other works by Clementi and Villa Lobos.

Gurt is the Paula Garvey Manship Distinguished Professor of Piano at Louisiana State University. He also serves as Piano Mentor at the Hot Springs Music Festival and is the head of the piano department at the Sewanee Summer Music Center. In 1982, he won first prize in the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.

Gurt has performed with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Capetown Symphony, the China National Symphony Orchestra, and the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. He has made solo appearances in Alice Tully Hall in New York, Ambassador Auditorium in Los Angeles, Orchestra Hall in Detroit, City Hall in Hong Kong, the Victorian Arts Center in Melbourne, Australia, Baxter Hall in Capetown, South Africa, and the Attaturk Cultural Center in Istanbul, Turkey. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the Juilliard School.

“Having Michael Gurt come to Hartsville is an incredible opportunity to expose our community to a giant in the piano world,” said Ryan Smith, assistant professor of music at Coker. “Michael plays with incredible muscularity and stamina, and his program of Schumann’s Kreisleriana and Rachmaninoff’s second piano sonata will demonstrate his enviable skills.” Gurt will also work with Coker’s piano students during his stay in Hartsville.

The concert is the third in the 2014-15 Hartsville-Coker Concert Series. Admission is $25 for adults and free for students under 18 or with a Coker ID. The final concert of the season will be held on March 16 at Center Theater when the HCCA hosts Mithril, an Irish folk group, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

The Georgia Boy Choir, under the auspices of the Hartsville-Coker Concert Association, will present an afternoon of choral music at the West Hartsville Baptist Church (1003 W. Carolina Avenue) on Sunday, April 21, 3 PM.  

Tickets are $25 for adults, $7 for children and students.   Group rates are available.  Tickets can be purchased at the Burry Bookstore (130 W. Carolina Ave.) or by calling 843-383-5875.

February 16th: Carolina Forest Performing Arts Academy to perform in Hartsville

The Carolina Forest Performing Arts Academy of Myrtle Beach will present a single performance of "One Night Only," a Broadway-based show of dancing and singing, at the Center Theater in Hartsville, Saturday, February 16th, at 7pm.  Voted "Best of Myrtle Beach 3 years running, and placing 4th in a recent U.S.-wide competition, the Academy includes many performers who have also appeared professionally in the Grand Old Opry.

October 21st: Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players to perform in Hartsville

The Hartsville-Coker Concert Association presents the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in the Hannah Lide Coker Music Recital Hall on the campus of Coker College. 

The New York-based Jupiter Symphony Chambers Players was created in 2002 as a living tribute to the late Jens Nygaard, founder and conductor of the Jupiter Symphony.

“The musicians are young and vigorous, and they throw themselves into their performances with an abandon that catches the music’s inner fire,” wrote Allan Kozinn, the long-time classical music critic of the New York Times. 

The program Sunday will include Romantic music for piano, clarinet, strings and voice by Beethoven, Dvorak and Spohr.  It also includes a guest performance by soprano Serena Hill, Coker College assistant professor of music.

Tickets for the concert, which are available at the door, are $25 for adults and $7 for children under 18. Coker students, faculty and staff with college identification are admitted for free.

The Hartsville-Coker Concert Association, a partnership between Coker College and Hartsville, presents an annual program of performing arts events in downtown Hartsville and on the Coker College campus.  Individual tickets are sold for each event, and discounted season tickets are included in the association’s membership.

October 21st: The Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players to perform in Hartsville

On Sunday, October 21, 2012, the Hartsville Community Concert Association will present the outstanding Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players of New York City in a program of works from the Romantic Era for Piano, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Soprano.  

The Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players will perform music by Beethoven, Dvorak, Hummel (Mozart's favorite pupil), and Spohr.  The concert will take place at the Hannah Lide Coker Music Recital Hall at Coker College (300 East College Avenue in Hartsville) at 3 PM.
