Artsville Open Mic returns with Guest Hosts, Bigger Prizes

Artsville has updated their popular monthly music event, Artsville Open Mic, once again for 2014. The changes include guest hosts and judges and bigger monthly cash prizes. Artsville Open Mic returns Monday, January 6. Songwriters may sign up today.

Last year, Artsville made major changes to their Open Mic format, essentially transforming the event into a year-long first round of their annual Artsville Songwriting Competition, which happens each November.

This year the format remains the same. Each act plays two original songs. At the end of the night, three finalists play one more song a piece, and then an anonymous judge declares a winner. Songwriters are judged on songwriting, vocal performance, instrumental performance, stage presence, and audience response.

This year the entry fee increases from $3 to $5. This will also increase the monthly cash prize given to each month’s winner. The winning act also earns a spot in the 2014 Artsville Songwriting Competition, with a chance at a $1,000 grand prize.

Songwriters must sign up on Artsville’s website, welcometoartsville.com. Complete rules and other details are also available on the website.

According to their website, “Artsville exists to catalyze the innate creativity in all of us.” Artsville is also responsible for the successful series, Artsville House Concerts.

Every first Monday, January through October, at The Midnight Rooster in Hartsville, 15 songwriters will perform their original songs. One songwriter will walk away with a cash prize and a spot in the 2014 Artsville Songwriting Competition (in November 2014).

Songwriters are judged on five criteria: songwriting (most important), vocal performance, instrumental performance, stage presence, and audience response. 

You must sign up online and there is a $5 entry fee.

Tickets for the 2013 Artsville Songwriting Competition go on sale at the Rooster coffee shop and eatery in Hartsville and on welcometoartsville.com. This follow up to last year’s popular event will take place at the Rooster.

The inaugural Artsville Songwriting Competition (ASC) last fall was a two-night, standing-room-only event featuring 25 songwriters from around the region. Spots for the competition sold out two weeks before the earlybird deadline. Table reservations for the finals sold out. “We were blown away by the success of our first year,” says Artsville founder Dylan Sneed, “and we believe 2013 will be even better.” This year’s ASC will feature a new tournament style format, a special tapas menu from the Rooster, and a $500 grand prize (double the amount of last year’s prize). General admission tickets are $10. Table reservations, which include four seats, are $40. Only 10 tables are available. Full details are on welcometoartsville.com.

A songwriter becomes eligible for ASC by performing at the monthly Artsville Open Mic at the Rooster in Hartsville. Each month Artsville picks one winner, who gets an automatic bid in ASC. In October, at the end of the Open Mic season, Artsville will add 8 “wildcard” songwriters to the list of ASC performers, bringing the total number to 16. These sixteen songwriters will compete in a single elimination tournament in front of a packed house and five judges. First place receives $500. Second place gets $100.
