March 16th: Goodman to speak at the Florence Library

Francis Marion University's Professor Emerita of Art Education, Donna H. Goodman, will give a presentation on her work at 3pm on Sunday, March 16 in the Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery at the Florence Library. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

Morning Walk in the Pee Dee, Discovering the Exceptional, an exhibit featuring the photographic works by Goodman, will also be on display through March 26 at the Florence Library. These pieces represent the natural beauty of Ridgehope, along the edge of Alligator Back Swamp, on the border of Florence and Darlington Counties.

On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the Florence County Library System will be partnering with Francis Marion University and eight other area organizations and businesses to host the first annual Downtown Florence Art Walk, a Saturday, March 8th event that will be held during the inaugural Poskito: South Carolina Photography and Video Conference. The conference will include a variety of activities including exhibitions, talks, and panel discussions by well-known regional, national, and international photographers, video journalists, professionals, and scholars from related fields.

The Poskito Conference’s Downtown Florence Art Walk, on Saturday, March 8th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, will include two talks at Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library. At 1:00 p.m. in the Joseph Stukes Meeting Room, “This Far by Faith”, a talk by Minuette Floyd, Associate Professor of Art Education at the University of South Carolina, will highlight her research documenting the African American tradition of camp meetings in North and South Carolina over the past decade. At 2:00 p.m. (also in the Stukes Meeting Room) Wesley Hogan, Director of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the Center for Documentary Studies, Duke University, will discuss the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, as well as some of the center’s recent photography-based projects.

A special craft program for children in grades 5K through 5th will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the library. The “Cheesy Mac” Picture Frame workshop will teach kids how to make colorful picture frames decorated with macaroni that they can take home with them. Admission is free.
