The Coker College Dance Program will present “Vantage Points,” the 2012 spring faculty and guest artist concert, at 7:30 p.m. March 22, 23 and 24 in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center.
Preceding the concert, students will perform senior Meagan Stone’s “Within” accompanied by a photo exhibit of Coker College alum John Shearer at 7:15 p.m. in Dance Studio Room 119 of the Performing Arts Center.
“Vantage Points” includes works by Coker College dance faculty, guest artists and senior dance students completing their capstone projects. The performances examine an eclectic blend of choreographic standpoints such as a ten-foot by ten-foot cage and an eight-foot tall platform. Guest artists David Dorfman and Terrance Henderson will also perform.
The program begins with “Spotlight,” a piece set by dancer Raja Kelly, from David Dorfman Dance, that was brought to Coker as part of the residency activities associated with the company’s November performance in Hartsville. Set to a high-energy score and interviews with Patty Smith, “Spotlight” highlights the cultural impact of Smith through demanding choreography that challenges the dancer’s stamina and endurance. The David Dorfman Dance residency was made possible by funding from the Southern Arts Federation
Guest artists Terrance Henderson and Malcolm Xavier Kiari Rembert from Vibrations Dance Company, Columbia, S.C., offer “Muthas,” an excerpt from a longer company work, which uses text by Nina Simone and music by Sole Fusion, Parliament Funkadelic and Charlotte Gainsbourgh to explore the role of the artist and the difficulty of disconnecting from society.
Choreographed by Assistant Professor of Dance Erin Leigh and inspired by the current climate of women’s issues in the United States, another piece on the program,“Stays,” weaves together the voices of Coker faculty and students, video projections and costumes by designer Vera Katharina DuBose to examine the use of the corset as a physical and metaphorical restriction device.
Guest artist and dance faculty member Ashley Suttlar Martin will present two pieces in the concert. “Beyond the Design” is an excerpt from a 2004 reconstruction that depicts the many facets of grief associated with loss and the impermanence of life. The piece is set to a haunting score by Kenji Kawai with text adapted from Bhante Y. Wimala. “Crossing Zone,” set to music arranged by Felton L. Martin III with voiceovers by the Gore family, is the second installment in a series of works that explores family history, wisdom and personal witness
“FEAR(less),” a senior thesis project choreographed by Devin Jennings, focuses on the idea of phobias and the effect of this persistent, extreme fear that is present in everyday life. Set to music is by Clint Mansell, the piece illustrates the struggle of three individuals as they attempt to face their fears with varying degrees of success.
“Arbeit Macht Frei,” a senior thesis project choreographed by Ali Nelson, focuses on three specific sufferings that people endured during the Holocaust: separation, dehumanization and struggles with identity, and presents a timeline of events with seven individuals who may or may not overcome the most difficult part of their lives.
Admission is free, and seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. For more information, call 843-383-8067 or contact Erin Leigh ateleigh@coker.edu.
