The talent and art contest offers the foundation members a chance to show the community what they can do.
“Just for them to be able to have the opportunity to perform and to be able to show off their capabilities instead of their disablities – that’s really what we’re trying to emphasis,” said Walter M. Sparrow, director of the Florence County Disabilities Foundation. “Everybody has talent, and they certainly showed theirs off today,” he said.
Judged by a five-member panel of community members, the top three winners in each category go on to compete at Francis Marion University May 15 against the upperFlorenceCountywinners. The first place winners from Florence County then compete against winners from across the Pee Dee region.
Cory Burgess was awarded first place in the art category for his drawings and will be one of those moving on to the next level along with second place winner Ryan Marlowe and third place winner Teresa Ann Todd.
The talent category included 28 entrants. Many of the performances included singing and dancing and varied from soloist dancers and singers, to a five-member skit, to a dance group called “The Motions” complete with a keyboard player, drummer and several guitarists.
The competition is an event the center’s members look forward to as much as Christmas said Billy Wilson, recreation coordinator at the center and emcee for the competition.
“This is a highlight for them… they always want to do their favorite act or favorite singer,” he said. “They just want to entertain.”
The Motions earned second place for their performance and will go on to perform at FMU along with third place winner dancer Catherine Hanna.
Kevin Lewis and Angela Lamb, were awarded first place in the talent portion of the competition for their duet.
“This was just unbelievably wonderful,” said Dr. Sam Marcengill, pastor of Lake City United Methodist Church and one of the judges for the event.
Marcengill said he “thought the way [Lewis and Lamb] presented it was real important.
“I liked the way that he sang,” said Marcengill. “He sang it himself, he carried the tune, he did the movement, he was dressed appropriately for that kind of song. He was the whole package,” he said.
Judges were Dr. Sam Marcengill, pastor of Lake City United Methodist Church, Anne Marcengill, Doris Brown, organist and choir director at Lake City First Presbyterian Church, Dr. Keith Callicut, superintendant of Florence County School District3, and Ronda Hanna of Lake City Community Hospital.
