St. John's Episcopal Church in Florence will host its
8th annual regional choir workshop on Saturday, September 22 at the
church. Dr.
Jared Johnson, Canon Organist and Choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
(Columbia), will be the clinician.
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes
with Choral Evensong at 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be catered at the
church. The registration fee of $25 includes lunch. Details
and the registration form are available at www.stjohnsflorence.org.
The registration deadline is September 7.
The workshop is
open to all area choir members, directors, and organists regardless of
denomination. The primary goal of the
workshop is to provide church musicians with an opportunity to learn and
develop choral singing skills, as well as to enjoy singing with a large group
of fellow music ministers. Through participation, directors will observe rehearsal
techniques and conducting styles that may offer fresh possibilities for their
choirs, and enjoy networking with directors from other choirs.
The workshop repertoire has been chosen
for its accessibility to non-professional singers in small church choirs while
still maintaining musical integrity.
Additionally, all of the music is appropriate for specific Sundays in
Cycle C of the liturgical year, which begins on December 2. The selections include works by Mendelssohn,
Bach, and Vaughan Williams.
Jared Johnson was appointed Canon Organist and
Choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in 2003. As an organ
recitalist, he has appeared in major venues throughout North America, Great
Britain, Sweden, and Australia. His solo recordings on the Pro Organo and
JAV labels have attracted critical praise and have been broadcast nationally on
Pipedreams. Dr. Johnson earned his M.M., M.M.A. and D.M.A.
degrees at Yale University. In 1997, he was awarded a Watson Fellowship
for a year’s study of choral music and conducting in London. Prior to
his appointment at
Trinity Cathedral, Dr. Johnson served on the music staffs of Trinity Church in
Boston; the Memorial Church at Harvard; Trinity Church on the Green in New
Haven, Connecticut; and the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
