April 25th: Charleston Symphony Orchestra to Perform Special Concert at Coker College

Two Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) ensembles will perform in a free public concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in the Watson Theater of Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center.
Individually and together, the CSO Woodwind and Brass Quintets will perform music that includes works by Haydn and Gabrielli as well as traditional New Orleans tunes.

The concert culminates a day-long celebration at Coker to commemorate the start of construction on a multi-purpose athletics center and the launch of its $12 million capital campaign, “Redefining Excellence:  The Campaign for Athletics and Residence Life.”

“It is an exciting moment in Coker College history and it is invigorating to be a part of it,” comments associate professor William Carswell, chair of the faculty senate and chair of the Department of Dance, Music and Theater.  “Our academic programs are being strengthened, our recruitment efforts are producing historic results, and the new residence hall and athletic facility will be welcome additions to our growing campus.  Coker is positioning itself to be well-prepared to meet the educational challenges of this decade and beyond.”

The public groundbreaking ceremony for the new athletic facility will be held at 10:30 a.m. across the street from the construction site, at the parking lot on Coker Avenue, which is between East Carolina Avenue and Byerly Avenue.

Prior to the concert, the CSO musicians will also lead master classes for students at Coker College.
