January 31st & February 1st: Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad at FMU's Performing Arts Center in Florence

“Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad” will be performed on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center.

The performance, a stirring drama with music, is a classical tribute to the great American who freed herself and hundreds of her people from the bonds of slavery. Her courage helped to change the world.

Share her adventurous life, the joys, sorrows and challenges faced by this brave woman with your children in this accurate and deeply moving musical history lesson.

The Jan. 31 show is at 6:30 p.m. and there are two shows on Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The performance, which is suitable for students from grades 3-12, is the third of four in the center’s 2011-2012 Family Series. Also being featured during the center’s inaugural season, are four other series which include Broadway shows, concerts, a variety series and shows in the Black Box Theatre.

Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $5 for children and may be purchased at  www.fmupac.org, via telephone at (843) 661-4444, and at the FMU Performing Arts Center Box Office. Telephone and personal ticket sales are available Monday through Friday between 12-5 p.m. Subject to availability, tickets may be available for purchase at the door.

Some people have inner-kids. Andy Offutt Irwin has an outer-kid. With a manic Silly Putty voice, astonishing mouth noises, and hilarious stories, he is equal parts mischievous schoolboy and the Marx Brothers, peppered with a touch of the Southern balladeer. People are drawn to him like magnets to a refrigerator. And inside, it’s all Mountain Dew and Jolt Cola. A native of Covington, GA, Andy is a storyteller, humorist, singer, songwriter, musician, whistler, walking menagerie of sound effects and dialects, and so much more; some of his talents are hard to categorize.

Barry Smith: Every Job I've Ever Had

Barry Smith: Every Job I’ve Ever Had began its life in 2006 as one of the shows created for The Barry Smith Comedy Project Experiment Thing, where he challenged himself to write (and perform) a new solo, autobiographical, hour-long multimedia comedy show every week for 4 weeks in a row. Yes, 4 weeks/4 shows. He did this all at a very cool venue called Steve’s Guitars in Carbondale, CO, which is also where “Every Job…” was workshopped.
