The Oil and Brass Exhibit

Featuring Denny Stevenson and Jim Gleason

Opening Reception November 7^th from 5:30-7pm

This two man exhibit will feature Denny Stevenson's oil paintings and Jim Gleason's brass sculptures. Stevenson is drawn to the Southern Landscape with its barns and old buildings. Gleason has the urge to create, combined with a reverence for musical instruments and the desire to preserve whatever life remains in the parts and pieces of an old instrument. This exhibit will remain on display until December 20th.

Gallery hours: Tuesday-Thursday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm, Friday 10am-2pm, and Second Saturday of the Month 10am-1pm

The Black Creek Arts Center is located at 116 West College Avenue in downtown Hartsville.

August 17th: Dylan Sneed to offer Songwriting Workshop

What: Internationally touring, critically acclaimed Americana songwriter Dylan Sneed presents the workshop Becoming a Songwriter in Hartsville.

Additional Info: Dylan Sneed, fresh off a tour of the UK and the Netherlands, will present a songwriting workshop in Hartsville, where he lives. Sneed will cover several topics related to songwriting, including music theory, song forms, creativity, and something he calls “The Artistic Mindset.” Students need to bring their primary songwriting instrument, and in Sneed’s own words, “If you can play a few chords, you’re good to go.” The workshop will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including a lunch break. Registration is $50. There are 2 spots remaining at the time of this writing. Registration will close on Saturday, August 10. You can register at dylansneed.com.

Who: Dylan Sneed, Hartsville-based, internationally-touring Americana songwriter, has been called "a sober Townes Van Zandt"(Columbia Free Times) and "the best side of true Americana: music of passion and skill that can move audiences with a whisper or a roar." July 15th - 18th: Summer Music & Art Camp at First Baptist in Florence

First Baptist Florence will host a Music & Art Camp on July 15-18, 2013 for children who have completed grades two through six. Free musical performance and art expo Thursday, July 18 @ 6:30 p.m. More information is available at fbcflorence.org.

Check out New Harmonies at the Black Creek Arts Center

The traveling Smithsonian exhibit, New Harmonies, has arrived at the Black Creek Arts Center in Hartsville.  The exhibit uses real instruments, a listening station, and colorful panels to tell the story of American music. Admission is FREE!  

  

The exhibit has well recieved by the community with tours booked from groups in NC, Myrtle Beach and area schools; call the office 843332.6234 to schedule your group tour. Tours can be scheduled outside of normal operating hours.

New Harmonies will be on display until November 6.

The Hartsville Children’s Chorale (for students in grades 3-9) is signing up new members.  Registration will be held at 4:45 p.m. on September 18 in the choir room at St. Barthlomew’s Church in Hartsville.  The Children's Chorale is now under the leadership of Sandra Howard and will be joining the Hartsville Community Chorus for a Dec. 4 Christmas Concert.  Membership dues are: $15 for single members and $10 for each additional family member.  For further information contact Sandra Howard at 843-409-3155 or san@sandrahoward.com.

September 6th: Coker Music to Present Faculty Recital

Coker College Music Instructor Eric Kesler, accompanied by pianist Michelle Wachter, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center. 

The baritone will perform works by celebrated European composers including Hugo Wolf, Maurice Ravel, George Butterworth, Giacomo Puccini, Charles Gounod and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

“I am excited about each piece on the program,” Kesler said. “Each work presents interesting challenges, from varying timbres and textures to different languages and styles.  I am also pleased to bring the audience a selection of pieces, which, although they are by fantastic composers, may not be particularly familiar.”

Kesler has performed throughout the Eastern United States and in Rome. He recently debuted in the University of South Carolina’s presentation of Friedrich von Flotow’s “Martha” and in Offenbach’s “Pepito.”

He is a previous first-place winner in the Advanced Men and Musical Theater categories of the National Association of Teachers of Singing’s Artist Awards competition. 

Kesler serves on the executive board of the Windswept Music Conference and serves as the voice instructor for the annual event. 

With a master’s in music performance and bachelor’s degree in music education from Appalachian State University and advanced level instruction certificates from the Creative Motion Alliance, Kesler is pursuing a doctorate in musical arts from the University of South Carolina. 

Accompanist Wachter is an avid performer and musical collaborator, accompanying both vocalists and instrumentalists. She earned a master’s in piano performance from the University of South Carolina and is continuing her education there, pursuing a doctorate in piano pedagogy.
