V-Day 2014: Call to Artists
About The V-Day Art Exhibit
The Art Show is in conjunction with V-Week and the performance of the Vagina Monologues. All of the events for the week are centered around raising awareness of violence against women and to raise funds for the Pee Dee Coalition to support their work to help women and their children who have been victims of domestic abuse. Given this mission, we would prefer work that may deal with this issue, other women's issues and/or be women centered pieces, but that is not a requirement, except for the Wearable Art Show.
Participation
We have 3 opportunities for artist participation:
1. Art Show and Sale both at FMU and at the FMU Performing Arts Center (PAC)We have more space for artists, including wall space, for display at the FMU show, Thursday, March 27 from 5-7:30.
On Saturday, March 29, we have limited table space, no wall space, for display at the PAC show, also from 5-7:30.
We request that you donate at least 10% of your sales at either of these shows to the Pee Dee Coalition.
2. Wearable Art ShowFor this event we are seeking artists of varying backgrounds and mediums to create pieces that may be displayed on a moving model.
The theme of these works should be "Strength", as our theme for the V-Week this year is "Standing Strong". All media welcome and encouraged.
These pieces will be displayed just prior to each performance (Thursday, March 27, FMU and Saturday, March 29, PAC) in a "runway" show where each artist will introduce and briefly discuss their piece.
3. E Pluribus Ovum This was inspired by the recent "Art Vending Machine" movement. For this event, we are asking artists to donate small pieces of work that will fit inside a 3.25" plastic egg. You may or may not choose to adorn the egg as well.
Eggs may be picked up at the Art Trail Gallery (availability TBA) and at FMU in the Fine Arts Office in the Hyman Fine Arts Building. These works will be sold sight unseen to patrons for $5.
Completed, filled eggs must be returned for sale by Monday, March 24 at 12pm. All of the proceeds going to the Pee Dee Coalition.

March 2nd: Masterworks Choir to perform concert of sacred music
The 35th anniversary season of the Masterworks Choir continues Sunday, March 2, with two performances of a concert of sacred music titled Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs.
The 80 voices of the Masterworks Choir, conducted by Dr. William Carswell and accompanied by Beverly Hazelwood, will perform at 4 and 7 p.m. in the historic Central United Methodist Church sanctuary.
The program features 17 works that draw on the rich and varied tradition of sacred choral music, all based on hymn tunes, psalm settings, or on spiritual songs. Most often Masterworks Choir programs are accompanied by chamber orchestra. For this unique concert the Choir will highlight the wonderful art of a cappella singing by performing over half the program without instrumental accompaniment. Many of these a cappella works will be performed by 60 members of the Choir who will be traveling to New York City in May to sing at Carnegie Hall.
The Masterworks Choir will perform a 30-minute Prelude Concert, alone, prior to joining with several other choirs to sing the Mozart Requiem under the baton of internationally-renowned composer and conductor John Rutter.
Vocal soloists for the concert are singers from the ranks of the Choir. Rebecca Thompson is the soprano soloist, along with a solo quartet comprised of Kristen Owen Hardaway, soprano; Ashley Long, alto; William Daniel, tenor; and Kevin McCormick, baritone.
Dr. Carswell is in his second season as Music Director and Conductor of the Masterworks Choir. In addition to leading the Choir, he serves as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Music at Coker College, Hartsville.
Masterworks Choir concerts are always greatly anticipated by the Florence community as well as the Pee Dee. Admission is free and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Susan Crouch, The Watercolor Journey Workshop in Hartsville
June 5 - 7, 2014
9 am – 4 pm
$300 includes instruction, handouts, and lunch
Level: Beginner with basic watercolor skills / Intermediate
Have you ever found yourself sitting in front of a blank sheet of watercolor paper with reference photo in hand…wondering where to begin? A little preliminary planning can be a good place to start your journey, and in this workshop you’ll learn a step-by-step process for making those important initial design decisions.
Some of the topics we’ll explore include:
• How to identify and develop the concept for your painting
• The benefit of a strong value pattern & creating a value sketch
• Selecting colors for your painting
• Understanding the personality of your paints (watercolor characteristics)
With the planning completed, paint will begin to flow as we use a variety of techniques that best showcase the unique spirit of watercolor. Drawings and reference photos will be provided so that students can paint along with Susan as she demonstrates each step. As an option, students may supply their own reference material and paint the subject of their choice. Each year new demos are created to provide practical experience with various subjects and watercolor techniques.
Susan is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. She teaches workshops and exhibits her paintings at art festivals throughout the Southeast. February 26th - March 1st: Coker Theater to Present 'How We Got On'
The Coker College Theater Department will present “How We Got On,” a coming-of-age play written by playwright Idris Goodwin. The hip-hop infused play will debut in Coker’s Watson Theater at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, with additional performances at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27-March 2.
Tickets to the event are $10 for the general public, $5 for students and seniors, and free to Coker students and faculty.
“How We Got On” is a modern-day play originally produced in Louisville, Ky., in 2012. The play details the lives of three young adults during the time when rap was a new and unique movement that began a cultural phenomenon. In addition to its historical hip-hop storytelling, the play also highlights the importance of finding your unique voice and path and the crucial roles that friendship and community play in that quest.
“One of the things that appealed to me was the musicality of the piece; the inherent rhythms and the fact that much of the sound support is meant to be made onstage by the actors,” said Kindra Steenerson, assistant professor of theater. “Additionally, I felt our majors could really sink their teeth into this play because they were born after the birth of hip-hop and know nothing of the world before it. Hip-hop is as familiar to them as any other old-school musical genre. Because of that, it's given us some good research opportunities to discover the origins of hip-hop culture.”
“How We Got On” will star students Datra Cook, Sammie Reece, Keon Wilson and Terah Gamble. Before each performance, there will be a poetic cypher to welcome all attendees, which will star Tammaka Staley, Daché Green, Darrell Daney and Aubanita Kirk.
For more information on the event, contact Steenerson at ksteenerson@coker.edu .
