February 27th: Black History Month Program at the Florence Library


The Children’s Services Department of the Florence County Library System has planned a special Black History Month Program on Wednesday, February 27th at 3:30 pm for children in grades 5K-5th. The program will feature the Story Squad.Story Squad is comprised of a band of actors, musicians and visual artists who combine high-tech theatrical elements with robust oral, visual, and musical traditions to create a fun, educational feast for the ears and eyes that will have the entire family rocking. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Florence County Library System.

February 7th: Florence Short Film Showcase

The 2014 Florence Short Film Showcase is an opportunity to screen seven Black-themed short films in celebration of creative content by and about Blacks of the African Diaspora. The event will start with a prescreening wine reception, followed by the screening of seven short films with a 10-minute intermission, ending the night with a champagne reception to discuss the films.

Submit your short film to the Florence Short Film Showcase



The Florence Short Film Showcase is now accepting short film submissions for the 2013 showcase, taking place on February 8, 2013 in Florence, SC.  

Filmmakers are encouraged to submit short films directed by a Black person, tells a story of the Black experience, and/or features a Black person in a leading role in all genres – narrative (drama, comedy, horror, and action), animation, and documentaries, no longer than 40 minutes in running time. Deadline for submissions is October 8, 2012, with the late deadline being November 8, 2012.  For or more information on how to submit a short film, visit the showcase website,www.florenceshortfilmshowcase.com.

Making a successful debut this year, the Florence Short Film Showcase will once again honor Black History Month by screening Black-themed short films in a concentrated setting to bring awareness to the art of short films and creative content by and about Blacks from the African Diaspora.  The Florence Short Film Showcase is a unique enrichment event, presenting the opportunity to promote the arts in the form of film, possibly inspiring county residents to become filmmakers.

February 6th-29th: Contemporary Fiber Art Exhibit in Cheraw



On loan from the South Carolina State Museum, The Contemporary African American Fiber Art Exhibit will be on display at the Cheraw Community Center, located at 200 Powe Street, from February 6th to February 29th.  


Admission is free.  The gallery at the Cheraw Community Center is open 8:30-5pm Monday through Friday.

The Florence Short Film Showcase is set for February 3rd



The Florence Short Film Showcase in honor of Black History Month, taking place on Friday, February 3, 6:00-11:00 PM, at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing & Technology (1951 Pisgah Road in Florence, SC), is an occasion to screen Black-themed short films in a concentrated setting to bring awareness to the art of short films and creative content by and about Blacks from the African Diaspora. 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as “an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.” With the Florence Short Film Showcase, it is a unique opportunity to promote the arts in the form of film, possibly inspiring community residents to become filmmakers. It only takes a digital camera or smart phone, and computer to become the next Tyler Perry or Steven Spielberg.

All invited films for screening at the Florence Short Film Showcase, acquired through the South Carolina Film Commission and an international appeal, are directed/produced by a Black person, tells a story of the Black experience, and/or features a Black person in a leading role.
