Florence Little Theatre to offer Rising Star Workshops

The Florence Little Theatre Rising Star Workshop is designated for teen’s grades 9-12. The Rising Star Workshop is for teenagers who love to learn and want to build their theatre skills. 

Classes will be separated into two session and will be held on Tuesday’s from 4:30pm to 6:00pm starting October 1st. Tuition is $175 per semester and $50 is due when you register. 

You can get a registration form by calling the theatre office at 662-3731 or stopping by the theatre. This will be one of the greatest opportunities your teen will ever have to immerse themselves in the theatre experience in the great atmosphere that only FLT can offer.

Registration Open for Coker’s Third Annual Summer Theater Camp

The Coker College theater program will host its Summer Theater Camp forstudents ages 8 to 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 8-19.

The educational program, which provides instruction in a broad spectrum of theater subjects through participation in games, music, dance and rehearsals, will culminate in a fully-staged production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.” Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19.

Featuring songs from the Academy-Award-winning animated feature including “Be Our Guest,” “Home” and “Something There,” this stage version of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” includes music by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice and a book by Linda Woolverton.

Tuition for the Summer Theater Camp is $90 for both weeks, and campers who wish to perform in “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” must attend both weeks of camp.  Registration payments can be made in full or on a weekly basis but must be paid in full by the first day of camp.

Previous productions of Coker’s Summer Theater Camp included “Seussical Jr.” in 2011 and “Annie Jr.” in 2012.

Five of the surviving nuns of the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover their cook, Sister Julia, accidently killed the other residents of the convent. In order to pay for the burial of the deceased nuns, the surviving must find a way to raise the funds. Through a greeting card company and a staged variety show, the true colors of the nuns are shown. From a ballerina nun to a spotlight hungry former circus performing nun, we see nuns like we’ve never seen them before!

The Florence Little Theatre will present the Wells Fargo production of Ragtime on September 14-22, 2012. This production is being directed by Shaw Thompson.

 

Ragtime is not only a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a relevant tale for today. The musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.

 

The Tony-winning score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty is just as diverse as the melting pot of America itself. It draws upon many musical styles from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from bold brass band marches to delicate waltzes, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems.

 

The Florence Little Theatre is located at 417 S. Dargan Street. Audition Alert: August 5th & 8th - The Foreigner at FLT

The Florence Little Theater will be holding auditions for The Foreigner on Sunday, August 5th at 2pm and Wednesday, August 8th at 7pm. Both auditions are for performers 18 years and older. The auditions will be held at the FLT and prior experience is not required. All audition materials will be provided! 

  

If you just want to be an audience member and not a performer, then mark your calendars! The Foreigner will run at the FLT November 2-10.

July 9th - 20th: Summer Theater Camp at Coker College

Coker College will be hosting a summer theater camp for kids ages 8-16 on July 9-20 from 9am-4pm. This year they will perform "Annie Jr." on July 19 & 20 at 7:30pm. Campers will need to bring their own lunch and snacks.

Camp costs $60 and registration deadline is June 29. In order for the campers to perform in "Annie Jr." they must attend both weeks of camp.

June 25th: Florence Area Literacy Council to hold fundraiser in Timmonsville

Paranoia, intrigue, sleuthing and suspense are just a few of the things that Murder Mystery Productions, an improv and dinner theater troupe, has in store for those planning to attend the whodunit fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. June 25 at the Carolina Ranch House in Timmonsville.

Benefiting the Florence Area Literacy Council, this Western-themed night of suspense is being touted as the “most fun that you can possibly have.”

“Actors are implanted into the crowd, but you don’t know who is who,” said Jerry Winsett, founder of Murder Mystery Productions. “Everyone is a suspect.”

Interactivity and improvisation are important as this is not your everyday, stage production.

“[The show] will happen around you. People will not be sitting in chairs staring at a stage,” said Christina Lawson, executive director of the Literacy Council. “It’s like a live-action game of CLUE.”

Aside from the murder mystery, dinner will be served by Venus Restaurant and Catering. There also will be a wine and beer bar available.

Tickets for the event are $40 in advance and $45 at the door. Seating is limited, so people interested are asked to get their tickets early.

South Carolina Dance Theatre hosts Summer Camps

The South Carolina Dance Theatre will sponsor two summer camps this year during the weeks of June 18^th and July 23rd. The week of June 18^th will be "Princess Ballerina Camp" and the week of July 23^rd will be "Dancers and Dolls Ballerina Camp. " Both camps will feature ballet instruction, crafts and fun activities related to dance. Both weeks will finish with tea parties and "dress up" day to showcase the dancers.

Under the direction of Susan Rowe, Artistic Director of the SCDT, quality dance instruction will be provided during the camps in an informal setting appropriate for the ages four (4) to eight (8). The cost for each camp is $100 with a non-refundable registration fee of $15. The camps are held at the Company’s studio at 1910-B Second Loop Road from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm each day.

The South Carolina Dance Theatre is a non-profit corporation founded in 1976 to encourage and nurture the artistic growth of dance as a performing art. Known for its annual production of "Nutcracker," the company has also presented "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" as well as other annual productions.

Miss Rowe is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. Former Ballet Mistress of the Les Ballets de Monte Carlo in Monaco and the Ballet du Nord in Roubaix, France, she was also a principal dancer with the Ballet du Nord as well as the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, Washington.

The SCDT specializes in teaching ballet and providing performance experience. A leader in dance education, the SCDT has a long and proud history of excellent instruction and service to the community through professional productions and ballet instruction. The Summer Camps are another outreach of the Company’s mission to promote dance as the most beautiful of all the arts.
