Through July 11th: The Artisans of the SC Cotton Trail at the Burr Gallery in Cheraw


The Cheraw Arts Commission is pleased to present an exhibit featuring the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail during June & July. The Burr Gallery is located in the Cheraw Community Center- 200 Powe Street in historic Cheraw, SC.

The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail is an elite group of juried artists from towns along the Carolina Cotton Trail stretching from I-95 to I-20. The group originated as an effort to emphasize the influence of cotton on the lives and towns of the rural south through arts and crafts. Artists from Florence, Darlington, Marlboro, Lee & Chesterfield Counties will exhibit pottery, photography, paintings, jewelry, blown glass and more.

The exhibit will be displayed in the Burr Gallery until July 11. Gallery hours are 8:30am-5:00pm - Monday through Friday. Contact the Cheraw Arts Commission for additional information at843.537.8420 x 12.

Opening June 12th: The Artisans of the SC Cotton Trail at the Burr Gallery in Cheraw

The Carolina Cotton Trail traces the influence of cotton on the lives and towns of the rural South. Come celebrate and enjoy the traditions of local handmade arts and crafts along with the heritage of the industry during the month of January at The Art Trail Gallery.

Regional Guild to hold jury for membership in October in Hartsville



An affiliate group of the South Carolina Cotton Trail, the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail began with assistance from the South Carolina Arts Commission.  Their mission is to bring together artists, artisans, and retailers for the benefit of marketing, tourism, education, and shared resources.

Currently numbering nearly 30 artists, the group jointly participates in shows throughout the region including wholesale and retail shows.  Group critiques are held periodically, as are educational workshops for members.  The current ASCCT website is http://www.peedeeart.com/cotton-trail.html

The 2013 Jury for Membership will be held Monday, October 21, at Black Creek Arts Council in Hartsville, SC.  

Artists will be expected to bring five works.  All work must be original, designed and made by the artist.  Accepted categories include fine and traditional crafts, locally produced food items, music items, and all fine arts media including modern and experimental media.  Work  is expected to be at a very high level both in terms of its artistic vision and its technical execution.

Artists who reside in Chesterfield County, Darlington County, Florence County, Lee County or Marlboro County, or any artist using cotton in their work as a material, or depicting cotton, is eligible to participate in the jury.  Any interested artists should contact Jury Chair Beth Wicker at ruralart@earthlink.net to sign up and for more information.

The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail will be featured at the Aiken Center for the Arts in October.  An opening reception will be held from 6-8pm on Thursday, October 4th.  Admission is free.  The Aiken Center for the Arts is located at 122 Laurens Street SW in downtown Aiken.

August 30th: Free Exhibit Opening at the Art Trail Gallery


An exhibit of artwork by the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail will open on Thursday, August 30th at the Art Trail Gallery in downtown Florence.  An opening reception will be held from 5:30-7:30pm on August 30th.  Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.

Gleason, Page & Starr join the Artisans of the SC Cotton Trail

The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail recently announced the induction of three new members:  Jim Gleason, Ann Page and Christopher Starr.

ASCCT members go through a two-part jury process before being asked to join the regional guild.  Artists who live, work or create in Chesterfield, Darlington, Florence, Lee and Marlboro Counties are eligible for membership, as well as artists who create cotton-themed work. 

With the addition of Gleason, Page and Starr, the group is now up to nearly 40 artists.

August 30th: Opening Reception at the Art Trail Gallery in downtown Florence



Nearly four years ago, a group of artists, arts council personnel, and cultural heritage leaders began meeting to create a guild for the artisans that live and create throughout the counties that lie along the South Carolina Cotton Trail. Today, the group numbers 33 members and is known as The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail. 

On Thursday, August 30th, the Art Trail Gallery in downtown Florence will host an opening reception for a gallery show of juried works by the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail (ASCCT). The reception will last from 5:30-7:30pm.

Admission to the opening is free and everyone is invited to attend.  The Art Trail Gallery is located at 135 South Dargan Street in downtown Florence.  The show will remain in the gallery through the end of September. 

“The Art Trail Gallery is known for hosting shows that highlight the diversity, talent and uniqueness of our region.  Obviously, that’s something that the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail want to be a part of,” said Bruce Douglas, President of ASCCT and Executive Director of the Florence Regional Arts Alliance. 

The ASCCT Show will consist of a variety of media. "The group has oil painters, acrylic painters, watercolorists, jewelry-makers, mixed media and collage artists, photographers, glass artists, artists who repurpose objects and many other exciting media," said Beth Wicker, who serves as the group's Standards Committee Chairperson.

Denny Stevenson wins Best in Show at Coastal Creations Art Show





Bennettsville's Denny Stevenson recently won Best in Show at the Coastal Creations Art Show in Pawley's Island.  The image above shows Denny's winning entry, Fun in the Sun.  Below is a write-up about the show from the  Island Art Gallery website


Island Art Gallery held the first of a series of Art Shows,"Coastal Creations", on Sunday, June 10th.  The Gallery was open from 1-5 celebrating the talent of the several local Artists including Sarah Mishoe, Barbara Keller, Jane Woodward, John  Bickle, Barney Slice,  Cindy Roy,  Marlene Askins, Janelle Feeney, Wayne Herndon, Denny Stevenson, and  Felix  Barabal .  The community was invited to drop in and share a glass of wine or ice tea while enjoying the creations of these wonderful artists.

The Show was judged by South Carolina's own, renowned artist, William McCullough.  William McCullough, a native of South Carolina, studied at the National Academy of Art and Design in New York City. His mentors include Daniel Greene, Eric Eisenberger, John Koch, and Robert Brachman. Over 200 of William McCullough’s realist oil paintings are In significant private, corporate and museum collections throughout the United States. McCullough’s current paintings are still lifes and landscapes exploring the everyday life and culture of the American South. He lives on a family farm outside of Kingstree South Carolina and also in the South of France.


First place was won by local artist,  Denny Stevenson, for his work " Fun In The Sun",   14x12,  oil on canvas.  Denny graduated in  1978 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Coker College.  In  1979 he studied at the Maryland institute of art for a year on a grant for painting from the Greenshields Foundation.  In1983 he graduated with a Masters of Fine Art from University of South Carolina. Mr. Stevenson worked for 6 years for Marvel, as an artist in the field of comics. In 1995,  Denny returned to painting and teaching fine art.  Mr. Stevenson was awarded $150 in cash.


Honorable Mention award was given to Local artist Sarah Mishoe for her work, "Afternoon on the Ashley".  Local artist, John Bickle, also received a Honorable Mention award for  his work, "Georgetown Park".


Island Art Gallery will be hosting the next art show in October so get out your paint brushes!  Subject matter will be Artists Choice, so let your creativity guide you.  Work needs to be newly created and approximately 12x12 in size before framing.  Artwork will need to be framed or finished edge Gallery Wrap.

The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail have set August 6th as the deadline for their next round of applications for inclusion into the five-county guild. Currently, 32 artists make up the group’s roster. In that group are painters, potters, photographers, collage artists, soap-makers, jewelry-makers, glass artists and a weaver.

“We are hoping to attract members in all media, as well as add to the great list of painters and photographers that we already work with,” said Beth Wicker, who serves as the Chair of the group’s Standards Committee. "New members will see a benefit (of joining the guild) immediately. We have a group exhibitions lined up in Florence for September and at the Aiken Center for the Arts in October," noted Bruce Douglas, ASCCT's President.

Artists and artisans from Darlington, Chesterfield, Lee, Marlboro, and Florence counties are eligible for inclusion into the group. Artists whose work is considered “of the area” or cotton-related can also apply to be in ASCCT.

All potential members are selected through a two-part jury process to ensure their craft is of a good standard. For the first stage, works will be reviewed by e-mailed jpeg photographs. Artists can submit five jpeg photos of their work to peedeearts@gmail.com (please include contact info) to initiate the process. These photos will then be distributed to the jury. Those meeting basic standards will be asked to present their work in person for the final jury stage. This will take place at the Art Trail Gallery in downtown Florence on August 17th

Accepted media for jurying are: clay, drawing, fiber glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, painting, paper, photography, sculpture, handmade books, and wood. Specialty foods made in the area will also be considered for jurying. The following forms of production are prohibited: crafts produced from commercial kits; commercial patterns, molds and forms; any item violating copyrights; plants (except Bonsai), polished rocks, decoupage and similar items; hobby crafts, shell crafts, country crafts, decal crafts, silk or dried floral arrangements, mass-produced items, commercial re-sales. No work made from commercial stencils or prefabricated forms. No copies of masters, advertisements or widely distributed photos. Work produced in a class or workshop is not eligible to be juried or shown.

ASCCT has solid showing at Visualicious 2012


The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail (ASCCT) had a great showing at the Art Trail Gallery's Visualicious 2012.  In all eight ASCCT members took home nine awards.  

In the Professional Category, Pollie Bristow of Darlington won 1st Place, Carolyn Atkinson of Hartsville took 2nd and Mike Fowle of Hartsville took 3rd.  Bennettsville's Denny Stevenson and Hartsville's Patz Fowle received honorable mention awards in the Professional Category.  

In the Novice Category, Suzanne Muldrow of Darlington won 2nd Place.  Janis Hobbs of Florence received an honorable mention award.  Florence's Gaye Ham took home two awards, winning recognition as an Emerging Artist and receiving the Watermedia Award.  

Visualicious 2012 will be on display through the end of June.  The Art Trail Gallery is located at 135 South Dargan Street in downtown Florence.  Admission is free.

Five Members of the Artisans of the SC Cotton Trail Win Ribbons as part of Photofabulous Exhibit



Members of the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail (ASCCT) recently had a great showing at the Art Trail Gallery's (Florence, SC) Photofabulous exhibit.  In all, five ASCCT members took home nine ribbons.

Group Critique Held at the Art Trail Gallery in Florence


The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail (ASCCT) recently held a group critique at the Art Trail Gallery in downtown Florence.  Francis Marion University Professor Greg Fry facilitated the discussion.

Artists from across the Pee Dee participated in the critique. 


ASCCT is a group of juried artisans dedicated to achieving its mission of bringing together artists, artisans, and retailers for the benefit of marketing, tourism, education and shared resources.  Artists and artisans from Chesterfield, Darlington, Florence, Lee and Marlboro Counties, as well as artists creating work representing the region, are eligible for membership.

A jury for membership into ASCCT will be held in April.  Pee Dee Arts will post information as soon as it is made available.

Borek leads workshop for regional artisans group
